Everything we do starts with sustainability. It is at the heart of our company and the driving force behind it. For us, it is important that we do not see sustainability as a silo, an add-on or a "nice to have", but as a serious holistic approach to create positive change. Therefore every decision is based on our company values: from pattern making to the selection of materials to the manufacturing of products and packaging.
First things first: if we want to talk about sustainability, we cannot avoid emphasizing that the most sustainable consumption is the one that does not happen in the first place. This means that the most sustainable garments are those that are not produced at all and the second most sustainable are those that you already own.
It is important to us not to encourage mindless consumption, but to support you on the path towards conscious decision making when in need of clothing. We keep it with the words of Vivienne Westwood: Buy less, choose well, make it last.
According to the Ellen McArthur Foundation, every second a truck full of textiles ends up in landfill or gets incinerated. Only 1% of textiles are recycled back into textiles, the rest will sooner or later become textile waste. This means not only that the environment is polluted but also that valuable resources are lost for good. In order to end textile waste, we should stop creating waste in the first place. And this is a question of design, because the design stage has the greatest influence on the overall environmental impact of a product.
For this reason, we have decided to design according to the cradle-to-cradle design philosophy which goes back to Michael Braungart and William McDonough. Cradle-to-cradle product design is an essential part of making a product and a business circular and thus strengthening a circular economy.
The Cradle-to-Cradle philosophy promotes the idea of imitating nature. In nature there is no such thing as waste, as everything that is no longer needed becomes a valuable resource aka nutrient for something else. At LOTTA LUDWIGSON we design for the biological cycle, meaning we want to create long-lasting clothing that will never turn into waste but into a nutrient for soil once it is no longer used. Hence, all our materials and components are biodegradable. This even required co-development of certain components over 1,5 years.
LOTTA LUDWIGSON stands for female empowerment. We want to encourage women to speak up, stand up, think big, live their dreams and shape our society. Considering the historical development of suits alone, suits for women are already symbolizing an act of empowerment as in the past women were not allowed to wear trousers let alone suits, which were reserved for men only. However, even beyond producing power business looks, we seek to make a valuable contribution to more equal rights and participation of women in our society.
For this reason, we support organizations that primarily promotes equal opportunities for women in every product sold.
We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment in every aspect of our business, including our packaging. All packaging components such as boxes, stickers, cards, tissue papers, ribbons, tapes and shipping cardboards are designed with a minimalist and zero-waste approach in mind. Therefore we only use materials that are biodegradable, compostable and/or recyclable.
